AS RECENTLY as six years ago, the business of handing out domain names and assigning IP addresses ultimately rested on the desk of one man: the late Jon Postel. His replacement, the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers, has a budget of $15.8 million for the coming year (doubled from 2003), and is proposing to increase its current 30 staff by 50 percent. The best way to avoid being blacklisted by the search engines is to avoid using some questionable techniques that were once popular to gain high rankings. Even if your website is not blacklisted by using some of the techniques below, it may be penalized (buried in the rankings) so your traffic will suffer all the same. - Dot-gov domains to cost $125
Federal agencies and state and local governments renewing .gov domain names or wanting new ones should be prepared to pay $125 a year starting July 31.
The General Services Administration today announced it will start charging the agencies that run more than 3,400 Web sites by the end of the month.
GSA issued a rule May 2003 that allowed state and local governments as well as American Indian tribes to use the .gov extension, but also reserved the right to charge them for using it

VeriSign is to rapidly update Domain Name System (DNS) records every few minutes instead of only twice a day.
