Domain Registry of America, based in Ontario, Canada, is prohibited from engaging in similar conduct in the future, and is subject to stringent monitoring by the FTC. The company also has to provide a full refund, including any administrative or cancellation fees, to approximately 50,000 consumers who cancelled a transfer request

Internet marketing firm Marchex Inc. has finalized a deal to pay a whopping $164.2 million for Name Development Ltd., which displays keyword advertising across a portfolio of more than 100,000 domains. The deal, along with the recent sale of a misspelled domain name for $112,000, offers evidence that mistyped URLs and other "accidental traffic" have become big business

Registrations for the .IN domain, which was opened to the public from February 16, have crossed 75,000 new registrations and the target of 200,000 .IN registrations within six months will be achieved much earlier than estimated, a top official said Monday

- UN versus ICANN
A U.N.-sponsored panel aims to settle a long-running tug of war for control of the Internet by July and propose solutions to problems such as cyber crime and email spam, panel leaders said on Monday. The panel, set up in December 2003, will lay groundwork for a final decision to be taken in Tunis in November at a U.N.-sponsored World Summit on the Information Society, where global control of the world wide web may be decided.
Right now, the most recognizable Internet governance body is a California-based non-profit company, the International Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN)

- Domain Name Dispute Cases Increased by 6.6% in 2004
In its February 18, 2005 press release, WIPO has reported filing an average of 3.4 UDRP and UDRP-based cases per calendar day in 2004, bringing the total number of cases received in 2004 to 1,179 -- an increase of 79 cases (or 6.6%) as compared to 2003. Also mentioned in the report is a 37 percent increase in ccTLDs cases over the previous year

But he has every right to the name and insists that had Apple offered him a reasonable sum and not gotten heavy with the lawyers, he might have handed it over

A new wave of internet domain name theft has been sweeping the world wide web. Recently, prominent internet service provider panix.com had their domain stolen, and the high value domain name sex.com was stolen and held for over three years costing the rightful domain name owner millions of dollars.
"Choosing the cheapest domain registration and website hosting may not be the smartest or safest decision" said Monte Cahn, CEO of ICANN (news - web sites) accredited internet domain name registrar www.Moniker.com. "It is important to select a registrar with the highest level of security and great customer service, not just a cheap domain name price."

Mozilla developers are closing the door on phishing schemes that exploit a widely reported flaw in the Internationalized Domain Names (IDN) specification. Upcoming builds of Firefox 1.0.1, Mozilla 1.7.6 and Mozilla 1.8 beta will have IDN disabled as a temporary corrective measure to protect users from identity theft

When the government gave its nod to the National Internet Exchange of India (NIXI) to start registering '.in' domains, it had obviously not foreseen the kind of rush there could be to acquire the latest, and the hippest, in Indian domain addresses.

- India to seek dilution of US role in Net governance
INDIA will push for dilution of control of US-supported Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) over global Internet governance. It will also suggest setting up an inter-government organisation to co-ordinate issues related to Internet and IP-based services at the UN-sponsored Working Group on Internet Governance meeting to be held in Geneva between February 14 and 16.

The Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) has given its preliminary blessing to Internet domain names .mobi, .jobs, .post, and .travel. Both .post and .travel (for postal- and travel-related services) were okayed by the Internet standards group last October, with .mobi and .jobs getting the nod following an evaluation process in mid-December
