At this week’s WSIS meetings in Geneva, France pushed the European Union to propose a new Internet Governance plan. If adopted, the EU's proposal - which calls for a government-run body to control the Internet - would mean the end of ICANN and business-led Internet policies, and hand over the future of the Internet to countries such as Iran, Syria and China

- ICANN Posts Proposed Amendment to .NET Registry Agreement for Public Comment
ICANN and VeriSign, the .NET Registry Operator, in consultation with representatives from ICANN-Accredited Registrars, have negotiated a proposed amendment to the .NET Registry Agreement. The proposed amendment limits registration fee increases to no more than 10% per year and incorporates a new version of the .NET Registry-Registrar Agreement

- Online smut still homeless as .xxx is delayed again
ICANN has delayed again the approval of the .xxx top level domain (TLD) until an unspecified "future date".
The establishment of the domain was originally agreed by ICANN in June, but has been mired in political debate after conservative groups in the US raised concerns about having a TLD specifically for porn. President Bush stepping into the fray with his own worries about a virtual red-light district last month has only slowed the process even further

Creating the ".cat" suffix for individuals, organizations and companies that promote the Catalan language and culture was relatively uncontroversial. Though the language is spoken largely in certain regions of Spain, backers say a domain name could unify Catalan speakers who live in France, Italy, Andorra and elsewhere. - Registrants For India's .In Domain Reach 130,000
More than 130,000 registrants have taken up the .in domain name registration, under a plan by the Ministry of Communications and Information Technology of India to overcome the lack of a national domain registration name. The number is up from the just 6,500 .in registrations in January.
