- ICANN and VeriSign Announce End to Long-Standing Dispute
ICANN today announced that it has reached an proposed agreement to end all pending litigation over its long-standing dispute with VeriSign. The proposed agreement documents are being posted for public comment and are subject to final approval of the ICANN Board. This settlement will clear the way for a new and productive public/private partnership in coordinating technical management of the Internet's domain name system

- Man accused of £1.5m Web scams
Peterborough Crown Court was told by the prosecution that Peter Francis-Macrae had tricked thousands of people into sending him money to register a .eu domain name on their behalf. Francis-Macrae is also alleged to have sent letters to people whose domain names were about to expire, demanding a renewal fee

- Nations squabble over internet management
Delegates at a meeting in Geneva on Monday failed to reach an agreement on who should control the internet's addressing system. The meeting, which is being held in preparation of the World Summit on the Information Society in Tunis next month, degenerated into a farce when delegates argued over the right of the US to control the internet's addressing system

- Who should run the internet?
Until recently it was an academic question. After all, the United States - thanks to public money and (later on) private entrepreneurialism - had been the midwife of the net in the 1960s and had assumed de facto maternal control. But this divine right is now being challenged. Last week the EU proposed new global institutions, possibly under UN control, to replace existing organisations such as Icann which controls the issuing of domain names such as ".com" and the "root servers" critical for the working of the net's infrastructure. This is to be decided at next month's UN world summit in Tunis on the information society, where the US is likely to be in a tiny minority against the rest of he world

Members of the US House of Representatives said this week the US should resist international pressure to give up authority over key internet functions amid a mounting feud over the issue.
